I have decided to start a blog. Not a very momentous statement but a large commitment on my part. I love quilting and want to start keeping track of what I'm doing. I also love to talk about quilting and share what I'm working on but don't have many friends who share my passion (unless you count my 9 year old who is starting to get interested herself).
I am going to check out the local quilt guild this week, it will be interesting to see who attends and what kinds of things they discuss. So really, this blog is just for me to talk and share what I'm working on, regardless if anyone is reading! I have decided to only share projects that I'm working on from here out, I won't go back in my archives and dredge up old projects. That being said, I currently have three projects on the go in various stages of completion and will discuss them all and keep posting updates as I go.
The background for this page is a project I finished last night, I thought it would be a good foundation for my blog. It is actually just a test piece for a larger version that I am planning. I wanted to try out the pinwheel blocks as I have never made one before and needed to see how difficult matching the seams was going to be. I think the biggest lesson I learned with this one is that the colour placement for the larger version is going to be key. I also made some goofs with the machine qulting as I am still working out the bugs with my new machine and frame (more on that later). The larger version will be a 60"x60" wallhanging, hopefully not too colourful for our living room. I have managed to use up mostly Bali scraps and a few fat quarters and eighths that I picked up on my last trip out west. I even used up my daughters scraps! I had to purchase just a few extra pieces to even up my reds/oranges/yellows and blues/greens/purples. I have most of the top pieces cut but am waiting for a parcel to come in the mail with the rest of my fabric. Thank goodness for my favourite store back home thecountryquilter.ca! Ann (the owner) is always willing to do my shopping for me and ship it out.
My second project on the go is a really simple strip-pieced twin size quilt for our youngest daughter's first big girl bed quilt. I used a roll of 6" strips of coordinated prints bought at The Country Quilter last March when I was home for March break. All I am missing is the cream print for large strips in between the colour strips. I'll have to post a picture once I get a few strips pieced together.
My third project is a king size that I am making with a set of Australian prints I picked up at The Country Quilter (see a trend here?). I have been working on this one on and off for the last year. I worked on a few small pieces in between, a baby quilt, a memory quilt for my Grandma, a couple of bags, and my background test piece. I also bought my new sewing machine in there and had to get used to using it on some of my smaller pieces. The frame has been a learning experience also, that should a post of its own. I have the king ready to quilt, just waiting for the batting to arrive. I'll take a picture of the king once I get it on the frame, that may be an exercise in itself.
I can only type so much in one sitting so will save some yakking for another day. I quilt because I love it, happy quilting!
