I started cutting fabric and got thinking about the pinwheels and how difficult it was going to be to make them acurately. This is when I decided to use some of the pieces I had already cut to make a little practice piece. I also wanted to try out some quilting before working on the finished piece. I didn't pay very much attention to colour placement on this practice piece and I think it shows! I will be very careful about placement on the final piece, even though this pattern is supposed to be a stash buster and not necessarily matchy-matchy.
When it came to the quilting, I used some tracing paper and outlined the main pinwheel in the centre along with the rectangles radiating out on one side and made a couple of copies.
Then I did some freehand drawing for machine quilting designs. I really was just playing around and made them more complicated than I would ever tackle at this point. I feel like I need to work on making myself care less about having everything perfect and just enjoy the process. Sometimes I can get really caught up on making it look right, but have to remind myself that the quilt is mine, it will never be displayed with the pattern or inspriational photo right beside it, and if I like it, then mission accomplished! I just got sidetracked there for a second. So here are the playing around photos.
I ended up playing it safe and am not 100% satisfied with the results except for the fact that I tried something different!
I know these photos are pretty crappy, I am most definitely not a photographer.
I'm pretty sure that I won't end up quilting the larger version with the flowers and leaves that I ended up choosing for the practice piece, but it was fun! Here is a photo of the final practice piece in case you can't make it out in the background photo. It is only 15"x15", and I put a hanging sleeve on the back. I might take it to work and hang it in my office for a little colour!
