A Quilter's Lament

This must be the most common complaint of every quilter I know, 'where do I find the time to sew?'.  It certainly is one of my major roadblocks!

Especially this weekend, as I relax for 20 minutes after having spent 3 hours at the University for our eldest daughter's basketball tournament and the last 5 hours at our son's hockey tournament.  Heading back for the rest of the hockey tournament tomorrow, a 12 hour day including travel time.  By the time we get all of the kids to bed I'm too tired to sew!  I also find that if I sew when I'm tired, I make mistakes!  And, I HATE making mistakes.

I end up having to manage my sewing time, basically piece meal it together.  I get all of my cutting done for a quilt top, have it all laid out in the sewing room (aka dining room), and then work away at piecing it during the week after the kids go to bed.  This may be why I typically choose patterns that can easily be strip-pieced, since they are often easily set aside and picked up at another time.  I find myself planning my quilting time while I'm doing my every day stuff, driving the kids to school and myself to work, lunch break and really boring meetings (just kidding!).  I find if I think about what I'm going to do and plan ahead, I end up being really productive when I actually find the time to sew.

When I am ready to put a quilt on the frame to quilt, I like to get everything set up the day before (since this takes a long time in itself) and then ask my husband for quilting time the next day.  I have to say that he is extremely supportive and doesn't hesitate to give me time to hide out in the basement and quilt.

Happy quilting and cheers to supportive families who let us feed our quilting addictions!
